Road Legal number plates are made according to the guidelines specified from the DVLA ( Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency)
Legal number plates adhere to the spacing requirements of the characters on the plate, the font of the characters, the margin guidelines around the characters and the legal text displayed at the bottom centre along with BSAU code in the right hand side corner.

Yes, 4D Number Plates are 100% road legal.
The DVLA state “ Characters on a number plate can be 3D” (HYPERLINK TO https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/rules-number-plates “4D” is the industry name for number plates made using our precision cut 3mm acrylic letters to distinguish from the 3D Gel style of plates.

Show plates are supplied not to be used on UK roads as they do not adhere to the rules governing road legal number plates. Certain styles of plates are classed as “show plates” because either the style of font, spacing of the characters or background colour of the letters is not approved by the DVLA.
Show plates are supplied for off-road use such as car shows & competitions.
Unlike some of our competitors we will not tell you all styles of 4D number plates or 3D Gel plates are road legal to ensure a sale. You may well have witnessed plates with characters almost 10mm or more in depth yet the sellers maintaining they are road legal. They simply are not as the increased height of the letters creates distortion due to the larger shadow of the letters and therefore reduces the legibility of the plate.
We operate with integrity when advising our customers to ensure you have a clearer understanding of what is allowed and have confidence in driving with your number plates.

Tinted plates are not advised by the DVLA to be road legal, therefore these are supplied only as show plates.

As we are a registered DVLA number plate supplier we are required to see proof of Entitlement (to the registration mark) and proof of ID

a letter of authorisation from a fleet operator (including lease or hire company) quoting the document reference number from the registration certificate
if your fleet is in the new V5C on demand scheme (also called ‘V5C suppression’), a PDF of the vehicle’s details from the view vehicle record service
UK trailer registration certificate (VTRC)

Yes, shortened / smaller number plates are allowed on UK roads as long as
– the spacing of the characters is adhered to according to the DVLA, there is atleast an 11mm gap from the edge of the letter to the end of the plate
– the font of the characters is UK Charles Wright
– the plates displays the legal markings such as manufacturers details in the middle
– BSAU code is displayed in the right hand corner.
